Scent: Sweet Venom
Clark Stanley’s Snake Oil Candle: Version 3 of 3
Sweet Venom
The sweet smell of getting away with it. Right up until somebody checks the ingredients.
We saved the best part of the Clark Stanley story for last. After years of selling his miraculous snake oil with the confidence of a man who'd never met an independent laboratory, someone in the federal government finally had a thought: what if we actually open the damn bottle?
A real Clark Stanley fact: the $20 punchline
Government testing of Stanley's famous liniment found mineral oil, a beef-fat-like substance, red pepper and turpentine. Know what wasn't on the ingredient list? Snake oil. Stanley was fined $20. Twenty dollars! You can get a more aggressive financial penalty today for parking badly in Boston. Somewhere, a rattlesnake is still waiting for its royalties.
And yes, the same Rattlesnake King once operated in Beverly, Massachusetts. We're Massachusetts-based too, but our idea of a recipe does not involve visiting both the butcher and the hardware store.
The scent: Sweet Venom
Juicy orchard apples swagger in first, warm cinnamon follows, and nutmeg and clove stir up trouble before sweet vanilla smooths out the evidence. It's a lush apple-cinnamon candle with autumn warmth and a wickedly sweet finish. Picture fresh apple pie cooling on the windowsill while someone inside insists they absolutely didn't eat the missing half.
Light it for fall evenings, family gatherings, or any occasion where you need the room to smell more innocent than its occupants. Great for the friend who loves vintage apothecary decor, funny candles, and true stories too ridiculous to need embellishment.
Vessel: 9 oz amber apothecary-style candle. No snake oil, no medicine, and absolutely no medical claims. Just fragrance. The federal government may relax.
Finish the three-version set
This is Version 3 of 3. Revisit the start of the sales pitch with Version 1: Confidence Without Evidence or slink into the middle with Version 2: Velvet Poison. You can also see all three Clark Stanley snake oil candles. Each version is sold separately. The only thing we're curing is a boring room.
Want the entire snake oil show? Shop Clark Stanley's Rattlesnake King 3-Candle Gift Set with all three versions for $89.99, saving $19.99 versus buying separately. Free standard U.S. shipping.
Burn it right
Keep the wick trimmed before each burn. On the first burn, let the melt pool reach the edge of the vessel when practical. Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep it away from drafts and anything flammable, and stop burning when about 1/2 inch of wax remains.
Shipping
Free standard U.S. shipping on every candle. Delivery estimates and applicable taxes are shown at checkout.
Your candle can smell incredible and have a questionable sense of humor. We see no reason to make you choose.
— OUR EXTREMELY SERIOUS BRAND PHILOSOPHY
We could’ve slapped “Live, Laugh, Love” on a jar. But then we’d have to live with ourselves.
— A STATEMENT FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT
Our sense of humor is questionable. Your checkout shouldn’t be. Shopify handles the payment. We handle the bad influence.
— THE DEPARTMENT OF ACTUAL RESPONSIBILITY
For the person who says “you shouldn’t have”—and, for once, means it. Still wants to know where you got it, though.
