Jynx Has Been Asked to Stop Touching the Wicks

JYNX HAS BEEN ASKED TO STOP TOUCHING THE WICKS

INCIDENT: Repeated unauthorized wick adjustments

CORRECTIVE ACTION: Apparently we’re writing an article about wood wicks now.

There are certain sentences nobody expects to say repeatedly at work.

“Who moved the fragrance samples?”

“Why is there wax on the floor?”

And, increasingly:

“Jynx. Stop touching the wicks.”

This should have been a simple instruction.

It was not.

JYNX: Which wicks?
MANAGEMENT: All of them.
JYNX: That seems excessive.

And that is how today’s employee incident became a guide to wood wick candle care.

Because if Jynx is going to keep touching them, somebody around here should probably know how they’re actually supposed to work.


WHY DO CANDLES NEED THE RIGHT WICK?

A candle wick looks simple.

It isn’t.

The wick is part of the candle’s fuel-delivery system. Once the candle is burning, heat from the flame melts nearby wax. Liquid wax travels through the wick toward the flame, where the fuel is vaporized and burned.

That means the wick, wax, fragrance and vessel have to work together.

A wick that supplies too much fuel can contribute to an oversized flame, excess heat and soot.

A wick that supplies too little may produce a weak flame, struggle to create an adequate melt pool or refuse to remain lit.

Which raises an obvious question.

Why wood?

Excellent question.

Jynx did not ask it.

He just liked the noise.


WHY DO WOOD WICK CANDLES CRACKLE?

One reason people love wood wick candles is their distinctive sound.

A properly burning wood wick can produce a subtle crackle reminiscent of a tiny fireplace.

Not:

HOUSE CURRENTLY BURNING DOWN.

More:

Tiny fireplace behaving itself.

The sound comes from the burning wooden wick and variations in the material as it combusts.

Different wick constructions, wax formulations and candle designs can produce different levels of audible crackle, so don’t expect every wood-wick candle to sound exactly the same.

Jynx has nevertheless classified the available settings as:

QUIET.

CRACKLE.

MORE CRACKLE.

The third setting does not exist.


HOW DO YOU TRIM A WOOD WICK?

This is where wood wicks behave differently from the long cotton wick many people picture when they think of candles.

Wood wicks generally perform best when kept quite short.

For many wood-wick candles, roughly 1/8 to 3/16 inch above the wax is a useful starting range. The candle manufacturer’s instructions should take priority because the appropriate height can vary with the wick and candle design.

Before relighting a completely cooled candle, remove the loose, charred wood from the top of the wick.

You can use a wick trimmer or carefully break away the brittle burned portion.

The goal isn’t to excavate the candle.

Just remove the excess char.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A WOOD WICK IS TOO LONG?

A wick that’s excessively long may create a larger or less stable flame and can contribute to soot or undesirable burning.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT’S TOO SHORT?

Cut it excessively short and the flame may have difficulty establishing itself or staying lit.

There is therefore an ideal technical procedure known within SinScents as:

DON’T GO NUTS WITH THE TRIMMER.


WHY WON’T MY WOOD WICK STAY LIT?

This is one of the most useful wood wick troubleshooting questions.

If a wood wick candle won’t stay lit, don’t immediately assume the candle is defective.

Several things can contribute.

1. THE WICK MAY BE TOO SHORT

If very little usable wood remains above the wax, the flame may struggle.

2. EXCESS WAX MAY BE SURROUNDING THE WICK

A struggling flame can become overwhelmed if the wick is sitting too deeply in liquid wax.

After extinguishing the candle and allowing it to cool appropriately, the wick area may need attention according to the candle maker’s instructions.

3. THE WICK MAY HAVE EXCESS CHAR

Wood wicks can develop burned material at the top after use.

Once the candle is completely cool, gently removing that loose char before the next burn can help.

4. THE CANDLE MAY SIMPLY NEED TO BE RELIT

Wood wicks sometimes take a little more persuasion than cotton wicks.

That does not mean hold a flamethrower against it.

We shouldn’t have needed to specify that.

We know who works here.


THE FIRST BURN MATTERS

Your candle’s first burn isn’t ceremonial.

It can influence how the candle performs afterward.

When you first light a container candle, give the wax enough time to develop a broad melt pool rather than lighting it briefly and immediately extinguishing it.

For many container candles, that can mean several hours, but always follow the manufacturer’s burn instructions and maximum recommended burn time.

Why?

Because repeatedly burning a candle for very short periods can contribute to tunneling, where the candle burns downward through the center while leaving substantial wax around the sides of the vessel.

Imagine digging a well through an otherwise perfectly good candle.

That’s tunneling.

Jynx calls it:

“MAKING A CANDLE INSIDE THE CANDLE.”

We do not.


SHOULD THE MELT POOL REACH THE EDGE?

You’ll often hear advice that the wax must reach the absolute edge of the vessel on the first burn.

Reality is a little more nuanced.

A developing melt pool is useful, but candle performance should be judged across repeated burns—not by forcing one extremely long first burn just to achieve a perfectly edge-to-edge pool.

The candle’s formulation, vessel and wick all affect how that melt pool develops.

Translation:

DON’T TORTURE YOUR CANDLE TRYING TO OBEY SOMETHING YOU SAW IN A 14-SECOND VIDEO.

Follow the candle maker’s burn instructions.

Give it reasonable time.

Let the candle do its job.


WHY DOES MY WOOD WICK HAVE A SMALL FLAME?

A smaller flame isn’t automatically a problem.

The real question is whether the candle is burning properly.

A controlled flame can be completely normal.

If the wick repeatedly goes out, produces very little melt pool or otherwise performs poorly, then troubleshooting makes sense.

But comparing your candle’s flame to a giant dancing flame you saw online isn’t useful.

In fact, an enormous flame isn’t something we’re trying to achieve.

MANAGEMENT: Still no.


DO WOOD WICKS MAKE CANDLES SMELL STRONGER?

Not automatically.

A candle’s scent performance is the result of the entire formulation.

That includes the fragrance, wax, wick, vessel and how they perform together while burning.

The wick influences combustion and heat, which means it absolutely matters.

But installing a wood wick does not magically transform a poorly formulated candle into a fragrance cannon.

Which brings us to another employee incident.

Jynx’s proposed solution to insufficient fragrance performance was:

“Have you tried more fragrance?”

We have.

That’s going to require an entirely separate Employee Log.


WOOD WICK CANDLE CARE: THE SINSCENTS VERSION

BEFORE EACH BURN: Let the candle cool completely and remove loose char from the wood wick.

KEEP THE WICK SHORT: Approximately 1/8–3/16 inch is a common starting point for many wood wicks, but follow the manufacturer’s directions for your candle.

GIVE THE CANDLE TIME: Especially during early burns, avoid repeatedly lighting it for only a few minutes.

WATCH THE FLAME: A controlled flame is good. Bigger isn’t automatically better.

RESPECT MAXIMUM BURN TIMES: Follow the instructions supplied with the candle.

KEEP THE MELT POOL CLEAN: Don’t drop wick trimmings, matches or other debris into the wax.

And finally:

DO NOT ALLOW A SMALL RED DEVIL TO MAKE UNSUPERVISED ADJUSTMENTS.

That last recommendation may be unusually specific to SinScents.


ARE WOOD WICK CANDLES BETTER?

Not universally.

They’re different.

Some people love them because of their appearance, their distinctive burning character and that subtle fireplace-like crackle.

Other excellent candles use cotton or other wick constructions.

What matters is whether the wick was selected and tested as part of the complete candle.

At SinScents, we’re particularly interested in wood wicks because they add another sensory element to the experience.

A candle already gives you fragrance, light and atmosphere.

The subtle crackle gives it something else.

And frankly?

THEY SOUND COOL.

Why candles tunnel.

Why the first burns matter.

Why a bigger flame isn’t necessarily a better flame.

Management considers the training comprehensive.

Jynx has subsequently asked whether two wood wicks would be twice as good.

This matter remains under investigation.
