Who Is Jynx? And Why Is He Making Our Candles?

There are probably easier ways to explain how candles are made.
Unfortunately, we have Jynx.
If you've spent any time around SinScents, you've probably seen him: small, red, horns, tail, suspiciously pleased with himself.
That's Jynx.
Calling him our mascot isn't quite right.
Mascots generally don't interfere with product development.
Calling him an employee creates several HR problems we're not prepared to discuss publicly.
So officially, Jynx is...
Jynx.
He appeared sometime during the development of SinScents and has behaved ever since as though the entire company was his idea.
We have been unable to produce documentation supporting this claim.
We have also been unable to get him to leave.
So we've decided you should meet him.
What Exactly Does Jynx Do at SinScents?
This depends entirely on whom you ask.
According to management:
Nothing.
According to Jynx:
Everything.
The truth is somewhere considerably closer to management.
His known areas of interest include fragrance development, candle testing, packaging, product names, unattended boxes, things marked DO NOT TOUCH, and any meeting to which he was specifically not invited.
His qualifications remain unknown.
His confidence is extraordinary.
This creates problems.
It also means that if you're wondering how candles are made, you're going to learn quite a bit by following Jynx around.
Mostly because someone usually has to explain why what he just did was wrong.
So, How Are Candles Actually Made?
At its simplest, making a container candle sounds almost insultingly easy:
Choose a vessel. Add a wick. Melt wax. Add fragrance. Pour. Let it set. Light it.
And technically, you've made a candle.
Making a good candle is where things become considerably more complicated.
Wax type, fragrance, fragrance concentration, vessel dimensions, wick construction and wick sizing interact with one another. A wick isn't merely the thing you light. It draws liquefied wax toward the flame, where the fuel is vaporized and burned.
Too much fuel can produce an oversized flame and soot. Too little and the candle may struggle to remain lit.
This is why serious candle development involves formulation and burn testing rather than somebody melting wax, dumping perfume into it and saying:
"That smells about right."
We mention this because Jynx has proposed essentially that process.
More than once.
Step 1: The Fragrance
This is usually where Jynx becomes interested.

A scented candle starts with a fragrance concept.
That might be relatively straightforward—vanilla, woods, citrus—or something considerably more specific.
At SinScents, we're considerably more interested in the second category.
Fragrance is developed around notes and an intended experience, but the fragrance also has to work inside a burning candle.
More fragrance does not automatically make a better candle.
There are practical limits to how much fragrance a candle formulation can accommodate while still performing correctly. Simply adding more fragrance oil does not guarantee stronger scent performance and can interfere with proper combustion.
Jynx's position remains:
"Have you tried more?"
Yes, Jynx.
We have.
Step 2: The Wax
Wax isn't merely there to hold the fragrance.
It's the candle's fuel.
When you light a candle, heat melts wax near the wick. The liquid wax travels through the wick toward the flame, where the wax is vaporized and burned.
There are numerous candle waxes and wax blends, including soy, paraffin, beeswax and other vegetable or formulated blends.
Different waxes and blends have different performance characteristics, which means there isn't one wax that is automatically perfect for every candle.
We'll get much deeper into wax in another Employee Log.
Jynx has opinions.
Of course he does.
Step 3: The Wick
This is one of the smallest components of a candle.

It's also one of the most important.
The correct wick depends on the candle's overall formulation and physical design. Vessel diameter, wax, fragrance and other formulation variables can all influence wick selection.
SinScents is particularly interested in wood wicks, both for their visual character and the sensory experience they can create.
But a wood wick isn't simply a tiny piece of lumber somebody stuck into wax.
It has to work with the wax, fragrance and vessel as a complete system.
We will dedicate an Employee Log to this.
We have to.
Jynx has already been asked to stop touching the wicks.
Step 4: Melt, Blend and Pour
Once a candle formulation has been established, the wax is melted under controlled conditions, fragrance is incorporated appropriately for that wax and fragrance system, the wick is secured and centered, and the candle is poured into its vessel.
Then something extremely difficult happens.
We wait.
Cooling and setting matter. Depending on the formulation, candle makers may also allow additional cure time before evaluating fragrance and burn performance.
Jynx does not consider waiting a manufacturing process.
Jynx considers waiting a personal attack.
Step 5: Burn Testing
This is the part consumers rarely see.
A candle can look gorgeous sitting on a table and still perform badly when lit.
So formulations need to be tested.
The interaction among wick, wax, fragrance and vessel affects how the candle burns. Testing can evaluate flame behavior, melt-pool development, fragrance performance and how the candle behaves over repeated burns.
Because a luxury candle shouldn't merely look expensive.
It should perform like someone cared about what happened after you lit it.
Jynx believes testing means lighting several candles simultaneously and watching them.
We have explained that there are additional steps.
Why Is Jynx Here?
That's a surprisingly difficult question.
The practical answer is that Jynx represents something we wanted SinScents to have from the beginning:
Personality.
There are plenty of beautiful candles.
There are plenty of expensive candles.
There are plenty of candle companies capable of describing sandalwood in four paragraphs.
We wanted to make exceptional candles without acting as though buying one required joining a country club.
SinScents can take fragrance, materials, construction and performance seriously without taking itself terribly seriously.
That's where Jynx fits.
He's curious.
He's impulsive.
He's occasionally helpful.
He has absolutely no understanding of organizational hierarchy.
And when someone tells him something can't be done, his immediate response is usually to determine whether that statement was a rule or merely an opinion.
Sometimes that produces a candle idea.
Sometimes that produces paperwork.
You'll be seeing both.

This is not going to be a normal candle-company blog.
We're opening the SinScents employee files.
Future logs will investigate things like why wood wicks sometimes won't stay lit, how candle tunneling happens, what makes a candle smell stronger, how fragrance notes work, what different waxes actually do, why the first burn matters, and what legitimately separates a luxury candle from an expensive jar of wax.
